Getting Your Licence
The Canadian Security Institute is licensed by the Alberta Solicitor General to
provide the Alberta Basic Security Guard Training Course (ABST) both with in-
class instruction by certified and approved Instructors. The course is 40 hours
in length and needs to be completed prior to taking the Alberta provincial
exam.
Once you have finished the ABST course with your approved provider you are
eligible to take the security service exam. This exam can be done through your
provider as well as other providers. In Alberta, security service exams are
supervised by the Ministry. You must achieve a score of more then 80% on the
exam.
There is no limit to the amount of times you take the exam should you not be
successful. Upon successfully passing the exam, students will receive a letter from
the Ministry indicating they were successful.
Step 1) Get a criminal record check
This check must include these elements:
- criminal record
- vulnerable sector
- local database
You can’t submit your application without these original documents. These
documents expire 90 days after they’ve been issued.

Step 3) Gather your documents
When you apply, you’ll need to provide photocopies of your:
- Canadian photo ID
- approved training course certificate
- 40-hour baton use-of-force training certificate (if applicable)
You’ll also need to provide a current:
- police information and criminal record check
- passport-size colour photo signed on the back by the police service
Step 4) Submit and pay for your application
There are 2 ways to submit your application:
In person
Take your application and documents to a registry.
Pay the licensing fee and service charge at the registry:
- $100 security service licensing fee, or
- $160 dual security service and investigators licensing fee, and
- $9 service charge
If your application is approved, you'll get a temporary licence that's valid for 60 days.
By mail
Send us your:
- completed application form
- required documents
- payment or online payment receipt for:
- $100 security service licensing fee, or
- $160 dual security service and investigators licensing fee
Pay the licensing fee with one of the following (made payable to the Government of Alberta):
- certified business cheque, or
- certified personal cheque, or
- money order, or
- bank draft
OR
Pay by credit or debit online:
- print and mail the receipt with your completed application
