The ABST course is the mandatory provincial training program required by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General for anyone seeking to work as a licensed security professional in Alberta. It provides the foundational knowledge and skills needed to perform duties safely, legally, and professionally.

Anyone who wants to apply for a Security Services Licence in Alberta — including security guards, loss prevention officers, patrol staff, and event security personnel — must successfully complete the ABST course and pass the provincial exam.

The course is 40 hours in length. Online students can complete it at their own pace, with access to materials 24/7.

Yes. The Canadian Security Institute offers a fully online, government-approved ABST course that can be completed from anywhere in Alberta. Students receive interactive lessons, practice quizzes, and access to an instructor for support throughout the program.

To register, you must:

Be at least 18 years old

Be legally entitled to work in Canada

Have no serious criminal record (a background check is required for licensing)

Be fluent in English and capable of reading, writing, and speaking English clearly and effectively

Once you complete the ABST course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion from the Canadian Security Institute. You will then take your provincial proctored online exam, which is administered through an approved testing provider that the Canadian Security Institute has partnered with to facilitate the official ABST examination.

After successfully passing your exam, you’ll be eligible to apply to Alberta Justice and Solicitor General for your Security Services Licence.

You must submit an application to Alberta Justice and Solicitor General that includes:

Proof of ABST course completion

A recent passport-style photo

A criminal record check from your local police service

The applicable licensing fee
Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks.

The Alberta Security Services Licence is valid for two years. You must renew before expiry to continue working legally in the industry.

After receiving your licence, you can work as a Security Guard, Loss Prevention Officer, Concierge, Patrol Officer, Event Security, or Access Control Guard in Alberta. Many graduates also move into supervisory, mobile, or executive protection roles with additional training and experience.
