The ABST course is the mandatory provincial training program required by Alberta Justice and Solicitor General for anyone seeking to work as a licensed security professional in Alberta. It provides the foundational knowledge and skills needed to perform duties safely, legally, and professionally.
Anyone who wants to apply for a Security Services Licence in Alberta — including security guards, loss prevention officers, patrol staff, and event security personnel — must successfully complete the ABST course and pass the provincial exam.
The course is 40 hours in length. Online students can complete it at their own pace, with access to materials 24/7.
Yes. The Canadian Security Institute offers a fully online, government-approved ABST course that can be completed from anywhere in Alberta. Students receive interactive lessons, practice quizzes, and access to an instructor for support throughout the program.
To register, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be legally entitled to work in Canada
Have no serious criminal record (a background check is required for licensing)

Once you complete the ABST course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion from the Canadian Security Institute. A recent passport-style photo
A criminal record check from your local police service
